Chris asks…
How can I get in touch with the CA Department of Labor?
I have an unemployment insurance claim that cannot be filed online and cannot be filed in person because there are no centers to report to. I cannot get through over the phone, and I have called repeatedly for four days. Does anybody have a direct number or an email address for the CA Department of Labor???
1-800-300-516 is the overloaded number in which you can never, ever speak with a human.

Richard asks…
Can someone please help me understand this letter? (U.S. Department of Labor – Employment and Training Admin.)?
The letter says …
The Department of Labor has made a determination on your Application for Permanent Employment Certification (ETA Form 9089) pursuant to 20 CFR 656.24 and as required by the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended.
Form ETA 9089 has been certified and is enclosed. This certification must be attached to the I-140 petition and filed with the appropriate office of the United States of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
I also have a ETA Case Number but when i go onto http://pds.pbls.doleta.gov/ to look it up, mine starts with an A instead of a D or P so i cannot check or anything..
Please help me understand this letter! Does it state my status or do they want more confirmation and more processing and checking?

Sandra asks…
What are the risks of reporting a problem with pay to the Department of Labor?
I have worked at a local restaurant for about 2.5 years and got sick of not being paid on time. The place is about 3+ weeks behind on pay checks and I got sick of it and quit. I have gone and gotten a new job since but I still have a few problems:
1) I am still owed about 3 paychecks.
2) I have not been given my tip out(I am a food runner) pretty much all year and it is supposed to be .75% of sales on the nights I work. I have asked about these and they have always said “We’ll look into it” and then never do.
So here is my little dilemma, I want to report them to the Department of Labor but I am worried about what potential negative effects that will have. Everyone in the place has back paychecks(some as far back as July of ’09) that are owed to them. I am super worried that by reporting it that the Dept. of Labor will come in and fine the place causing no one to ever get paid potentially closing the restaurant.
I am really just looking for advice – I ultimately want to insure that I get paid and that the rest of the employees are paid and treated fairly.
Thank you in advanced.
If it is applicable – I live in North Carolina and last Saturday(3/27) was my final day.

Your assessment of the risk is valid, it is possible the owners will declare bankruptcy and stiff people, but basically, they are stiffing them now, so a DOL claim is completely appropriate and valid.
Another option would be a small claims suit.

Carol asks…
Does anyone else feel like they’ve been discriminated against by the Department of Labor?
I was laid off from my career of 17 years last August, when the plant I worked in closed. The U.S.Department of Labor has a Trade Act program where people in my situation submit a proposal for an educational training program. If the program is accepted by the DoL as being suitable for the person, will increase chances of employability, and the school is the low cost provider for similar courses of education, the government will pay for tuition, supplies, and living expenses.
I have submitted several proposals for education in the medical field, which is a growing industry. I know of many people that I worked with who have been approved for schools like Apollo and others. All of my proposals for these schools have been denied, and the only education they will pay for me is non-credit community college courses that are designed for personal development only. Has anyone out there had an experience similar to mine?
