Any one know a good hotel in New Orleans that offers free park and transport to cruise terminal?
This has been the most difficult and expesive place to arrange this type of service i have ever delbt with. Parking is over $10.00 per day. Few hotels offer transport almost non to port. I thought New Orleans sounded fun to check out before the cruise but am becoming leary. Any ideas are appreciated.

I don’t know of any hotels that offer a shuttle to the cruise terminal. The terminal is on the river next to the Convention Center and taking a taxi there from downtown is easy + not expensive. I also don’t know of any hotels that will let you leave your car in their lot for free while you are away on the cruise, but it’s worth asking
The Hotel Le Richelieu in the French Quarter offers free, on-site parking for guests. Other hotels offer free parking, but not all the time (ex. Only on weekends). Check Expedia & Orbitz and also check the hotel websites.

The least expensive parking downtown is at the AmTrak/Greyhound station (1001 Loyola Avenue). It is $4/day, you don’t have to be an AmTrak or Greyhound customer, and the lot has a 24/7 attendant.
You could drive from your hotel to the AmTrak/Greyhound station, park, and take a taxi to the cruise terminal. Then do the reverse when you return.
New Orleans has really a lot to do:

Where can I find a grant for planting trees in New Orleans?
Where can I find grants to plant trees in New Orleans?
I want to revitalize a playground in New Orleans. The area is very poor and coming back slowly that I am considering. Due the families having low budgets, I was thinking of planting apple, orange and pecan trees in the park over the benches. I know the trees would bare fruit and the kids would be able to have a healthy snack. Any ideas of who I could ask for finacing on the trees and materials need to plant them?
ANy ideas on playground funders would be great too.

poptropicahelp answers:
Start with Parkway Partners, since they already work with NORA on maintaining parks and parkways. Also, try Hike For Katreena, as they have a similar goal to yours.
Good luck!

What should I do while staying in New Orleans?
My family is planning a trip to New Orleans for the week-end. We have three small daughters; ages 7, 5, & 2. What are some fun, “cheap” things we could take them to do? We are planning on the zoo and the aquarium. What else is there?

poptropicahelp answers:
Lots to do but here are some ideas on a budget. Take them to the children’s museum, mardi gras world, the wax museum, a carriage ride, walk along jackson square and the river walk, a zephers baseball game, the IMAX theater, steamboat natchez, cafe du monde for beinets, take a streetcar ride. Enjoy!

Ruth asks…
What was the original way New Orleans was pronounced?
I understand the locals normally say N’orlins – Stress on the Nor.
I was just curious if there was an original French way in which Orleans may have been pronounced. Currently I say New Orlins – stress on the Or, but when I was young I would say New Orleens – stress on the leens.

poptropicahelp answers:
Only Hollywood and tourists call the city N”Awlins.
The original name of the city was in French: Nouvelle Orleans. It is pronounced new vell ore lay on.
There are two “normal” pronunciations today:
New Or le ans (Orleans is 3 syllables)
New Or leans (Orleans is 2 syllables)
The issue is somewhat confused by the fact the City of New Orleans is also (same boundaries) Orleans Parish (parish = county). Everyone says Or leans Parish (Orleans with 2 syllables).

George asks…
Would New Orleans be a good setting of a urban fantasy novel?
I’ve been planning to write a novel similar to the Dresden Files with a supernatural setting. I think New Orleans would be a good city to base it in, but I’m not sure sure since it has been done a couple of times before. I think the city would be the perfect place given the feel of the city. Does anyone have any opinions or even suggestions for any other cities that would be good.

poptropicahelp answers:
I like the idea of New Orleans. It’s a unique city that is not easily reproduced and holds many attributes that can’t be found anywhere else.
It’s certainly distinct from the run of the mill “AnySmallTown, USA” and “NotNewYork, New York”.
